American Alligator - The American Alligator is a large lizard-shaped reptile with a rough scaley hide. The tail is long and muscular and its head is large, flat and elongated. Alligators have large, powerful jaws and will eat anything they catch. The American Alligator is found only in the southeastern United States with large populations in Florida. The maximum estimated life span of alligators in the wild is 30-35 years. These alligators can grow to very large sizes; the largest alligator recorded in Florida was 17 feet 5 inches long. Alligators reside in large shallow lakes, marshes, swamps etc., and usually, but not always, in freshwater.
